Nitrates

Excessive nitrate levels in waterbodies are harmful to ecosystems and adversely affect water quality. The federal authorities' "Nitrate strategy" is designed to reduce nitrate contamination.

Nitrates are plant nutrients. Because they are particularly soluble in water, they pollute the water when the plants can no longer consume all the nitrates present in the soil.

In an effort to reduce the contamination of waterbodies by nitrates, a "Nitrate strategy" has been launched by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, the Federal Office for Agriculture and FOEN. Under Art. 62a of the Water Protection Law, federal subsidies are provided for the remediation of nitrate-contaminated waterbodies.
