Responsibilities of the federal authorities

  • Drawing up federal legislation and supervision of enforcement
  • Responding to proposals from the National Council and Council of States
  • Developing guidance documents and aids to enforcement
  • National Groundwater Quality and Quantity Monitoring Network (NAQUA)
  • Competent groundwater protection authority for federal projects (national motorways, railways, airports, high-voltage power lines, pipelines, military installations, etc.)
  • Competent groundwater protection authority for the Federal Supreme Court
  • Supporting the identification of exploitable groundwater resources and the constitution of cantonal inventories of water supply installations and groundwater resources Giving support to studies aimed at detecting inadequate quality of groundwater resources with a view to remediation
  • Assessing requests for financial support for programmes to remediate contamination of groundwater with agricultural chemicals (nitrates, pesticides)
  • Giving support to public information campaigns
  • Providing advice and information
