Hazard level 3: Significant hazard

Hydrological event

The flow in the river is within the range of an event that occurs once every 10 to 30 years on average. The lake level is below the flood limit.

Effects

At this water level, bursting of banks and flooding may occur in exposed places.  Local flooding of underpasses, underground garages and basements is possible. Local obstruction on exposed traffic routes is possible and small-scale local damage can be expected.

Recommended actions

It is extremely dangerous to remain in the vicinity of surface waters. Keep well away.

Monitor the situation:

  • Heed the flood warnings issued by the Federal Office for the Environment.
  • Pay attention to the severe weather information and the orange flash flood alerts from MeteoSchweiz.
  • Pay attention to the traffic situation (traffic reports on the radio, www.viasuisse.ch)
  • Monitor weather developments locally and for the river basin upstream by observation and by consulting radar rainfall images.
  • Monitor water flow developments from the cantonal and federal flow monitoring stations in the headwaters.

Actions:

  • Take movable property (e.g. cars) to a safe place.
  • Secure buildings.

Close flood protection devices and windows in garages and basements. Seal floor gullies.
