International Treaties

This international Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution was drawn up by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva and has been in force since 1983.

Its aim is to reduce the harmful effects of air pollution on human health and the environment. Eight specific Protocols address the control of emissions of sulphur, nitrogen oxides, ammonia, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
