Waste management indicators

The development of total municipal solid waste (MSW) arisings mirrors that of gross domestic product; no decoupling has yet occurred. Nonetheless, there has been a substantial shift in MSW management over recent years – away from incineration with energy recovery and consignment to landfill (until 2000) and towards recycling. The recycling rate is now well above 50%.
