Soils indicators

As a result of contaminant entry via airborne deposition and precipitation, and due to application of mineral fertilisers, farmyard manure and plant protection agents and illegal disposal of wastes, scarcely any chemically uncontaminated soil remains in Switzerland. The use of heavy machinery or vehicles causes increasing soil compaction in agricultural and forestry sites alike. Only if soils are used carefully and suitably will their functional capacity and thus also fertility – in short, soil quality – be retained.
