The section
- provides support to the competent federal and cantonal agencies in enforcing the Major Accidents Ordinance (MAO) and in the area of earthquake mitigation;
- assesses measures designed to prevent accidents in connection with existing and planned installations that are under federal supervision (i.e. military installation, railway installations, roads, high-pressure oil and natural gas pipelines);
- works towards uniform enforcement of the Major Accidents Ordinance throughout Switzerland and produces guidelines in consultation with representatives of the competent authorities, industry and the scientific community;
- is actively involved in expert groups on accident prevention within international organisations such as the OECD, the UNECE and the ICPR (International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine against Pollution);
- develops and coordinates the federal earthquake mitigation program and prepares the necessary technical information and procedures for its application;
- helps the federal services by the implementation of preventive measures for earthquakes;
- keeps an inventory seismic safety of federal buildings;
- develops the procedures and the possible solutions for the appreciation and the reduction of the seismic risk for infrastructures;
- promotes earthquake mitigation at the cantonal, community and private level through information, awareness raising, methodological data and support;
- takes an active role in expert groups of the swiss society of engineers and architects (sia), in the committee of the swiss society for earthquake engineering and structural dynamics (SGEB), as well as in other technical committees regarding seismic mitigation activities.
