Fees for waste incineration
The development of incineration fees shows to what extent waste disposal is organised in a cost-effective manner. The fees should ideally be as low as possible without causing a reduction in performance. This is particularly important because in Switzerland a high percentage of the fees for waste are paid directly by the originators. A refuse bag charge that is too high prompts illegal disposal (private incineration, uncontrolled dumping).
Incineration charges have been dropping in recent years and in 2013 were at CHF 146 per tonne. When distributed over the population this contribution amounts to about 15 centimes per day and inhabitant. This is very low compared to other taxes, such as for health provision. For this reason the status is evaluated as positive. The reduction of fees is attributable to increasing amortization and to the good capacity utilization levels of plants.
Since the fee systems vary from country to country no international comparisons can be made for this Indicator.
