Living space

A sufficient quantity of living space is a basic requirement. However, increasing the living space also contributes to overdevelopment in agricultural areas, where land is already scarce, and to greater energy consumption. Heating energy consumption, which contributes to the production of greenhouse gas emissions and therefore plays a decisive role in climate change, is particularly problematic.

Method

The data come from the Buildings and Dwellings Statistics of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (prior to 2009: Buildings and Dwellings Survey), which provides information about the structure of all building and housing stocks and the living conditions (e.g. density of occupation, space per inhabitant) of the population.
