Some pollutants such as ammonia, methane and nitrous oxide are generated predominantly by agriculture. A particular issue in this regard is livestock husbandry which produces the majority of ammonia and methane emissions. The application of nitrogenous fertilisers on farms is responsible for the release of nitrous oxide. In addition, agricultural machinery generates emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide. Increased production in the agricultural sector is generally associated with higher emissions of these pollutants.
The production value of the produce generated by the agricultural sector is obtained from the total value of agricultural commodities: 1. sold 2. processed by the producer or 3. obtained for own consumption; inventory changes; own-account fixed capital formation.
