Industrial production
Production of goods inevitably involves environmental pollution. One aspect of this, apart from consumption of raw materials, water and energy, is emission of pollutants. These contaminate the atmosphere, water and soil. Disposal of the waste generated during production can also be environmentally damaging. The production index measures the monthly output from manufacturing industry. As a rule, an increase in the index is considered desirable as evidence of a productive economy, but higher output can also be assumed to involve more environmental pollution. Although it is possible to counteract this – for example by using environmentally-friendly technologies or avoiding the use of materials which pollute the environment – these measures cannot necessarily halt the negative impact of a continuous increase in production, they can only slow the rate of increase somewhat.
