Discharge forecasts

Warnings and alerts are important in order to keep flood damage as small as possible. These are based on, among other things, forecasts of discharge rates and lake water levels. In order to issue warnings at the right location, the spatial resolution of hydrological forecasts must be as high as possible. It is therefore desirable to receive hydrological forecasts from as many gauging stations as possible along the larger waters of Switzerland.

Comment

Since 2011, the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) has a statutory obligation to warn the population and the authorities of flood events. In recent years, it has been working on providing hydrological forecasts for the entire territory of Switzerland. Since July 2023, hydrological forecasts for all major water bodies have been published on the FOEN website. There are 51 stations in total. The goal has thus been achieved. It cannot be ruled out that minor adjustments will be made in the coming years.

International comparison

Internationally there is no comparable indicator.

Method

The number of stations producing hydrological forecasts published on the FOEN home page is taken as indicator.
