Regionalisation of wastewater management

Wastewater treatment in Switzerland is at a high level and guarantees efficient water protection.  To maintain or increase this efficiency, professional and economic organisation of wastewater disposal is necessary. It can be assumed that regional structures (supramunicipal organisations and larger plants) can guarantee this better than municipal and small-scale structures with many small plants. The indicator provides information on the economics and professionalism of the wastewater management.

Comment

In wastewater management in Switzerland, for some time now there has been a trend towards joining smaller treatment plants. The result is fewer but larger plants overall. This means that wastewater treatment is increasingly being organised more economically and professionally and more efficient water protection can be guaranteed. For this reason the trend is evaluated as positive. Since there are no criteria or comparable situations for assessing the current state, it is not rated.

Method

The number of treatment plants is obtained from the FOEN database used to raise the wastewater levy.
