B19001 Application to release alien spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) for experimental purposes

Description and origin of organism:

  • Originating from South East Asia, spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) is a pest of fruits, berries and vines;
  • The spotted-wing drosophila that will be used in the experiment come from populations established in Switzerland. They were isolated from fruits collected near the respective locations and propagated in the laboratory.

Content and purpose of experiment:

  • Spotted-wing drosophila eggs, larvae and pupae will be placed in fruits at various locations;
  • The aim is to study the impact of predators on spotted-wing drosophila populations in semi-natural habitats;
  • The fruits will be collected again before the adults hatch;
  • These experiments will help to develop more sustainable methods for controlling spotted-wing drosophila.

Location of experiment:

Agroscope experimental sites at Reckenholz (ZH), Wädenswil (ZH), Changins (VD) and Conthey (VS), and FiBL experimental site at Frick (AG)

Duration of experiment: Six weeks in summer 2019, from July to September

Licensing procedure:

  • The procedure is based on Articles 17 et seq. and 21 et seq. of the Ordinance on the Handling of Organisms in the Environment (Release Ordinance, RO) of 10 September 2008 (SR 814.911).
