In November 2016, the first climate conference following the adoption of the Paris Agreement was held in Marrakesh. As the Paris Agreement came into force on 5 October 2016, the first conference of the parties to the Paris Agreement (Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement, CMA) also took place in Marrakesh. The aim of the negotiations was to initiate subsequent efforts to implement the Paris Agreement. Work programmes were adopted for the various themes and the first in-depth discussions took place. At the same time, it also became clear that the opinions of the countries varied greatly on how the Paris Agreement should actually be implemented. It is important for the parties to the Paris Agreement to agree on the modalities of its implementation in the upcoming negotiations before 2020.
