Previous reduction targets and target achievement review

In 1993 Switzerland ratified the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and thereby committed to contributing to the stabilisation of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. The 1997 Kyoto Protocol established the first internationally binding targets for greenhouse gas emissions for member states. Within the framework of two commitment periods, Switzerland engaged in concrete objectives and corresponding efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The pages linked below explain Switzerland’s commitments and provide a detailed overview of how target achievement is monitored.

2020 reduction target (for the years 2013 to 2020)

As part of its contribution to global climate protection Switzerland set itself clear targets for 2020 In the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, Switzerland was internationally obliged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 15.8 per cent below 1990 levels between 2013 and 2020. Switzerland narrowly missed its national target for 2020, but was able to meet its international target under the Kyoto Protocol for the years 2013 to 2020 thanks to emission reductions through projects abroad.

2010 reduction target (for the years 2008 to 2012)

In order to curb dangerous anthropogenic interference with the Earth’s climate system, the 1997 Kyoto Protocol established the first internationally binding targets for greenhouse gas emissions for member states. In the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, Switzerland was internationally obliged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions between 2008 and 2012 by an average of 8 per cent compared with 1990 levels. Switzerland was able to meet this target by taking into account accountable emission reductions from projects abroad and the accountable greenhouse gas balance of Swiss forests.
