Review of target achievement

A review of target achievement takes place at the end of each commitment period and is based on the greenhouse gas inventory. The Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement and the CO2 Act regulate how the accountable sink (greenhouse gas balance of vegetation and soils) and emission reductions through projects abroad count towards achieving targets.

2010 target achievement review (for the years 2008 to 2012)

Switzerland met its commitment under the Kyoto Protocol for the 2000–2012 period. The review of its target achievement also considered emission reductions through projects abroad and the accountable sink (CO2 storage by Swiss forests).

2020 target achievement review (for the years 2013 to 2020)

Switzerland narrowly missed its national target for 2020, but will meet its international commitment under the Kyoto Protocol for the years 2013–2020 thanks to emission reductions through projects abroad. According to clearly defined rules, Switzerland can take a part of the CO2 stored in Swiss forests and in Swiss harvested wood products into account, i.e. deduce it from its emissions.

2030 target achievement review (for the years 2021 to 2030)

Under the Paris Agreement, Switzerland is committed internationally to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 per cent by 2030 compared to 1990, implemented by an average reduction of at least 35 per cent compared to 1990 over the years 2021–2030. The CO2 Act transposes this target into national law and defines the measures necessary for its implementation.
