Funding for climate protection

From 2025, Swiss climate policy will not only continue to focus on existing instruments but will also place a strong emphasis on funding measures. The revised CO2 Act and the Climate and Innovation Act provide the legal basis for this. Both came into force on January 1, 2025.

Decarbonising industry

In Switzerland, the industrial sector is responsible for around a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing industrial emissions could thus play a significant role in Switzerland reaching its net zero target by 2050.

Adaptation to climate change funding programme

From 2025, the federal programme Adapt+ will promote measures and projects that minimise the risks resulting from climate change, that protect the population, material assets and natural resources, and that increase the capacity of society, the economy and the environment to adapt to the changes ahead.

Funding in the building sector

In the building sector, the federal government and cantons fund energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through two programmes: the federal and cantonal Buildings Programme and the federal impulse programme for the replacement of heat generation systems and energy efficiency measures. The two programmes work in tandem.

Other funding

The CO2 Act provides for a number of new funding schemes to bring Switzerland closer to its 2050 net-zero target.

The new funding schemes help private individuals, trade and industry to increase their use of renewable energy and, in turn, reduce climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions. Both the CO2 Act and the Climate and Innovation Act have been in force since January 1, 2025.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Funding is aimed at the largest emission sectors: buildings, transport and industry. It provides support for the replacement of fossil-fuel heating systems, geothermal and solar heat projects and the use of renewable gases. The CO2 Act also guarantees subsidies for renewable aviation fuels, overnight train services and procurement of electric vehicles for public transport.
