Persistent organic pollutants (POPs)
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are regulated globally under the United Nations Stockholm Convention. National implementation is governed by the Chemical Risk Reduction Ordinance (ORRChem).
Legal basis
Annex 1.1 ORRChem
The regulations governing most POPs are set out in Annex 1.1 (Persistent organic pollutants).
Annex 1.9 ORRChem
The regulations governing one POP are set out in Annex 1.9 (Flame retardants):
- Decabromodiphenyl ether
- Annex 1.9: Chemical Risk Reduction Ordinance (ORRChem)
Flame retardants
Annex 1.16 ORRChem
The regulations governing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which are classified as POPs, are set out in Annex 1.16 (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances):
- Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and its derivatives
- Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and its precursor compounds
- Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its precursor compounds
