Biotechnology involves the use of biological organisms or systems for research, development, diagnostic or industrial purposes. It is applied in the fields of agriculture, pharmaceuticals, medicine, the environment and the agro-food industry. In this context genetically modified, pathogenic or exotic organisms are employed in contained use or in the environment.
However, its application also raises a number of questions in terms of biosafety and biodiversity. Should these organisms be released uncontrolled into the environment, they could pose a threat to humans, animals and plants or other organisms. The FOEN therefore has the task of preventing the release of potentially harmful organisms from closed systems, ensuring the safe handling of these organisms in the environment and safeguarding the preservation of biodiversity, its sustainable use and equitable benefit sharing.
