Air

Current situation: The National Air Pollution Monitoring Network (NABEL) and cantonal and urban monitoring networks provide information on current concentrations of the principal pollutants.
Ozone: an irritant: Warm, dry summer weather is accompanied by rising ozone levels. The aim of measures being taken by the federal and cantonal authorities is to bring about longterm reductions in the air pollutants that lead to ozone formation.
Fine particulates: a health hazard: With every breath, we inhale thousands of particles of fine dust. The limits specified for respirable fine particulates are regularly exceeded by a clear margin in cities and built-up areas and along busy roads.
Particulate traps: effective protection: Every year, hundreds of premature deaths could be prevented and billions of francs in healthcare costs could be saved if all the lorries, buses, tractors and construction machinery in Switzerland were fitted with particulate traps.
Diesel: harmful emissions: Diesel-powered cars are becoming increasingly popular. But unless they are fitted with particulate traps, they can cause air pollution, with harmful effects on human health and the climate.
Air pollution: Pollutant maps: For a variety of air pollutants, maps are available showing the level of pollution in Switzerland.
