Topic Environmental law

Protection of the environment requires that all actors of society apply environmentally sound practices. The aim of environmental policy is to promote such practices. Environmental law is an important instrument for the implementation of environmental policy.

Enforcement and supervision -

The federal government sets out the objectives of environmental protection in 11 federal acts and 64 ordinances. The cantons are primarily responsible for enforcing this legislation and the federal government takes on a supervisory role. In some areas, the federal government is itself responsible for the enforcement of environmental legislation.

Programmvereinbarungen im Umweltbereich -

Die programmorientierte Subventionspolitik ist seit 1. Januar 2008 in Kraft. Seither legen Bund und Kantone in Programmvereinbarungen gemeinsam fest, wie die Verbundaufgaben im Umweltbereich gelöst werden und welche Subventionen der Bund dafür zur Verfügung stellt. In der ersten Programmperiode (2008-2011) wurden 665 Mio. Bundesmittel in Umweltmassnahmen investiert.

Aarhus Convention -

The United National Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)’s convention on access to information, public participation in decision-making processes and access to justice in environmental matters was signed in Aarhus, Denmark in 1998 and came into effect in 2001. Switzerland ratified the Convention in March 2014 and has been a party to the agreement since 1 June 2014, along with forty-five other states and the EU.
