B/CH/13/01 (B13001): Application to release genetically modified wheat strains with improved mildew resistance for experimental pur-poses

Request authorised 15.08.2013.

Publication in the Federal Law Gazette (BBl):

Applicant: Institute of Plant Biology, University of Zurich

Organism: Wheat

Property: Mildew resistance

Genetic modification:

- Mildew resistance gene

  1. Promoter: Ubiquitin promoter from maize;
  2. Mildew resistance gene: a Pm3 allele from wheat; a 27 bp long DNA sequence, which codes for the HA epitope tag, was inserted before the stop codon into all alleles except Pm3b;
  3. Terminator: Nopalin synthase termination sequence from Agrobacterium tumefaciens

- Marker gene

  1. Promoter: Ubiquitin promoter from maize;
  2. Selection marker gene: manA from Escherichia coli;
  3. Terminator: Nopalin synthase termination sequence from Agrobacterium tumefaciens

Purpose of experiment:

  • To research the functioning of resistance genes from plants
  • Clarification of biosafety aspects

Location of experiment:

  • Protected site of Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon research institute (ART), Reckenholzstrasse 191, 8046 Zurich

Duration of experiment: March 2014 to August 2018

Legal basis:

  • Gene Technology Act (GTA)
  • Release Ordinance (RO)
