Monitoring earthquake activity

The main tasks of the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) include the monitoring of earthquake activity in Switzerland and neighbouring regions. The FOEN contributes to this activity through the updating of the measurement infrastructure.

Seismic activity in Switzerland is monitored using a highly sensitive digital measurement network, which can register very weak vibrations, and a measurement network for strong earthquakes.

In addition, the SED uses temporary networks to monitor important construction and industry projects in Switzerland. These projects usually involve the monitoring of induced seismicity.

The recorded data are used to improve and evaluate the national seismic hazard maps. Real-time recordings made during major earthquakes can form the basis for the rapid assessment of the impacts on buildings and infrastructure.
