What is the state of our forests? Following publications in 2005 and 2015, the Forest Report 2025 gives answers for a third time, providing comprehensive insights into the condition of Swiss forests, current trends and prognoses for the future.

The Timber Trade Ordinance demands that market actors exercise due diligence, i.e. check that products are legal before buying or selling them. Timber Trade Regulation in Switzerland

From 1 January 2022, placing illegally harvested tiFrom 1 January 2022, placing illegally harvested timber and the products made from it on the market in Switzerland is banned. It requires all market players to comply with their due diligence obligation and to minimise the risk of illegal timber.

The federal government wants to create suitable framework conditions for sustainable, efficient and innovative forest management and ensure that the forest fulfils its diverse functions.

Features of Switzerland’s forest

One-third of Switzerland is covered by forest. The forest provides wood for construction, furniture and energy, offers protection from natural hazards, contributes largely to biodiversity and is a valuable recreational site for humans

Forest protection

The Confederation carries out prevention and control measures. It harmonises its activities with developments abroad and coordinates with the cantons and other actors at the national level.

Wood Resource Policy and Action Plan

The Wood Action Plan implements the Confederation’s resource policy. From 2009 to 2016, the action plan initiates and supports projects that deal with wood as a resource and its reuse.
