Switzerland is a net importer of phosphorus. An annual quantity of 16 555 tonnes of phosphorus is imported, and approx. 4000 tonnes exported. 90% of the imports are used in agriculture. Overall, the phosphor cycle is dominated by the agriculture and disposal sectors. On a quantity basis, the greatest unused potential for phosphorus recovery in the disposal sector lies in the treatment of sewage sludge. Based on the present study, the phosphorus cycle in Switzerland can be adequately assessed from a holistic standpoint, in which the potential for raising material efficiency and reducing risks are considered.
