Safety laboratories in biotechnology enterprises
The use of genetically modified, pathogenic and alien organisms in safety laboratories harbours a substantial risk for people and the environment. However, the laboratories are important and necessary for handling and analysing environmental samples of hazardous pathogens.
In 2005, there were 31 biotechnology enterprises with safety level 3 and 4 laboratories in Switzerland. By 2014 the number of such laboratories had increased to 42. This is an increase of 26% in 9 years. The relatively high number of safety laboratories demonstrates the great significance of biotechnology for Switzerland, and the importance given to safety. The increase can also be attributed in part to the increase in new threats to health (pandemics, bioterrorism). For this reason the Indicator is not evaluated.
The data are collected by a survey of cantonal agencies responsible for enforcing the Ordinance on Major Accidents.
