Volume of mobile telecommunications data
Mobile phone networks are not only used for the transmission of phone calls, they are increasingly being used for the transmission of data. Data transmission increased sharply following the introduction of smartphones. The greater the volume of transmitted data (e.g. videos, music, games, e-mails, apps), the higher the transmission power has to be.

Mobile communication plays a crucial role in the digitisation of society and the world of work. According to the Federal Council’s “Digital Switzerland” strategy, Switzerland should be among the world’s leading countries in terms of the availability and use of mobile and fixed broadband connections. This (initial) state is fulfilled and cannot be evaluated from an environmental perspective.
The level of exposure to high-frequency radiation in the public space is still relatively low. However, the volume of data transmitted via mobile telecommunications (with video applications accounting for more than half) has risen sharply in the past few years: the current rate of increase is equivalent to almost a doubling of the volume each year. This development is expected to persist for the next few years. The change in the
level of exposure to mobile communication radiation has not yet been assessed. For that reason, the trend cannot be evaluated.
Information regarding the volume of transmitted data is obtained from mobile network operators.
