Volatile organic compounds emissions

Volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) - other than methane and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) - are formed by the evaporation or incomplete combustion of solvents, thermal and motor fuels. The main sources of volatile organic compounds are trade, industry and road traffic. The compounds range from non-toxic to highly toxic and carcinogenic (e.g. benzene). Volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides are the most important precursors of photo-oxidants (ozone/summer smog).

Method

Emissions are determined by multiplying the annual human activity rates by pollutant-specific emission factors. Data are gathered by means of surveys, modelling and calculations.
