Sulphur dioxide emissions
Higher concentrations of sulphur dioxide (SO2) can have especially negative effects on the respiratory tract; asthmatics and people with chronic respiratory diseases are particularly at risk. SO2 is toxic to plant life (phytotoxic). It is also an important precursor in the formation of acid rain and secondary particulate matter. Sulphur dioxide emissions result from the combustion of sulphur-containing transport and heating/process fuels as well as from some industrial processes.

Method
Emissions are determined by multiplying the annual human activity rates by pollutant-specific emission factors. Data are gathered by means of surveys, modelling and calculations.
