Calculation method for the recycling rate of beverage containers

The Ordinance on Beverage Containers (BCO) of 5 July 2000 sets out a minimum recycling rate of 75% for glass, PET and aluminium beverage containers. If this recycling rate is not attained, the DETEC may introduce a deposit.

The recycling rate of a given container material is the percentage of the containers recycled in a calendar year compared to the total weight of the non-returnable containers manufactured from this material and used in Switzerland.

The recycling rate for beverage containers is published every year on the FOEN website.

Detailed information on calculating the recycling rate of glass, pet and aluminium beverage containers can be found in the fact sheets.
