Brief summary report.

This report contains a summary of the status and trends of the aquatic biocenosis in the two largest rivers in Switzerland, the High Rhine and the Aare. It is based on the results of the fourth and fifth coordinated biological surveys on the High Rhine in 2006/2007 and 2011/2012 and the second survey campaign in 2011–2013 in the Aare between Lake Biel and the Rhine. Along with the small invertebrate organisms (macroinvertebrates) on the river bed and the fish, other groups of organisms such as phytoplankton and benthic algae (mainly diatoms) and macrophytes (higher aquatic plants) are also discussed.
