The Global Framework on Chemicals (subtitled For a Planet Free of Harm from Chemicals and Waste) was adopted in Bonn, Germany, in September 2023. It is a framework agreement to promote the safe and sustainable management of chemicals, and follows on from the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), which ran from 2006 to 2020.
The Global Framework on Chemicals is supported not only by national governments, but also by international and non-governmental organisations and industry.
Main features of the Global Framework on Chemicals
- The Global Framework presents a comprehensive plan with 5 strategic objectives and 28 targets to guide governments , the private sector and civil society towards addressing the life cycle of chemicals, from production to waste management, in a safe and sustainable way.
- It provides a mechanism for stakeholders to rapidly identify and address chemicals of concern.
- To ensure its implementation, the Global Framework is accompanied by a temporary fund, which is financed by governments and the private sector.
