2010 target (for the years 2008 to 2012)

Switzerland committed early on to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, it undertook to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions between 2008 and 2012 by an average of 8 % compared with the 1990 level.

Switzerland passed the CO2 Act to successfully implement the international target of the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. The Act specified measures to reduce CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and prescribed a reduction target of 10 % compared with the 1990 level.

Switzerland met its target for the 2008–2012 period by including emission reductions through projects abroad and the accountable carbon sink (CO2 storage by Swiss forests).
