Climate Change Adaptation Network: Committees and working methods

The Adaptation Network is coordinated by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and managed by a steering group. Specialised work is carried out in committees dedicated to specific issues.

From 2025, the Climate Change Adaptation Network will focus on two challenges: increasing heat stress and more frequent summer droughts. The aim is to work with key stakeholders on a regular basis to share experiences, discuss critical matters, compile best practices and draw up concrete recommendations on urgent enforcement issues.

The network also supports the FOEN in updating and developing the Federal Council’s adaptation strategy and action plan. By involving participating stakeholder groups in the network, a broad-based discussion can be achieved and action can be taken on a larger scale. The network increases effectiveness, opens up opportunities, acts as a catalyst for solutions and creates innovation.

Working methods and committees

Within the network, the content-related work is carried out in committees whose activities are designated and approved by a steering group. The institutions represented in the network ensure that its results are disseminated and distributed, as well as making sure that principles and strategies are applied within their own organisations and networks.

The network’s tasks are performed by the following committees:

  • The steering group, consisting of 14 members, is responsible for strategic leadership. Its responsibilities include appointing the working groups and receiving their results.
  • Ad hoc working groups deal with specific issues, particularly in relation to the priority topics (heat stress and summer droughts).
  • Information and harmonisation at all levels and in all specialist areas are promoted through coordination and dialogue forums, e.g. as part of the existing conference for coordination between the cantons and the FOEN. New coordination forums are launched as required.
  • In order to strengthen knowledge transfer, webinars and other forms of dialogue are organised as required.

The network’s activities and results are summarised annually in a short report.
