The water levels of over 175 natural lakes and reservoirs in Switzerland depend on various influential factors. In addition to long-term climate change, precipitation, water withdrawals and inflow and discharge capacities play important roles in the short term. However, the water levels are especially influenced by lake regulation. All large Swiss lakes are regulated, except for Lake Constance and Lake Walensee.

The FOEN measures the current water levels of Swiss lakes, makes predictions and publishes flood warnings.
