Persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are regulated globally under the United Nations Stockholm Convention. National implementation is governed by the Chemical Risk Reduction Ordinance (ORRChem).

Legal basis

Annex 1.1: Chemical Risk Reduction Ordinance (ORRChem)
- Persistent organic pollutants
- Contains the regulations governing most POPs

Annex 1.9: ORRChem
- Flame retardants
- Contains the regulations governing one POP: Decabromodiphenyl ether

Annex 1.16: ORRChem
- Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances
- Contains the regulations governing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which are classified as POPs:

- Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and its derivatives
- Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and its precursor compounds
- Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its precursor compounds
