Carbon offsetting: Voluntary offsetting

Besides the offsetting obligation for distributors of fuels, there is a voluntary scheme in which companies and private individuals can offset their greenhouse gas emissions. For example, they can pay a surcharge when buying a flight or ordering goods online. In contrast to the offsetting obligation, this voluntary market is not regulated by the state.

In voluntary carbon offsetting schemes, companies and private individuals can purchase carbon allowances, the revenue going to fund climate protection projects. The emission reductions from these projects are verified by independent bodies. Voluntary offsetting is not regulated by the state. However, consumer protection laws apply.

Non-governmental organisations that are independent and certified check and register allowances in voluntary offsetting schemes and define project requirements. They are constantly developing their standards and registers.
