The greenhouse gas inventory shows the emissions from national and international aviation separately. Emissions from international flights are dominant, although the national total only includes emissions from national flights.
In line with the guidelines of the UN Climate Convention, the national total does not include the greenhouse gas emissions from international aviation. The national total – and consequently the Transport sector – only includes emissions from national flights, but not from international flights.
- Total greenhouse gas emissions for Switzerland excluding international flights (relevant for Switzerland’s reduction targets): 46.47 million tons of CO2 equivalents (2019);
- Of which emissions from national flights: 0.12 million tons of CO2 equivalents (2019);
- Additional greenhouse gas emissions from international flights (not included in the total or the Transport sector, as not relevant for Switzerland’s reduction targets): 5.73 million tons of CO2 equivalents (2019).
- Due to the measures taken to contain the coronavirus pandemic, emissions substantially decreased in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, emissions rose sharply again and reached 73 per cent of the 2019 level.
