2030 target (for the years 2021 to 2030)

Under the Paris Agreement, Switzerland is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 % compared with the 1990 level by 2030. To reach this target measures are implemented both in Switzerland and abroad.

The Paris Agreement requires Parties to submit an updated reduction target every five years. Switzerland’s target for 2030 is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 % compared to the 1990 level and by an average of at least 35 % over the 2021–2030 period.

Parliament approved these reduction targets when it ratified the Paris Agreement in June 2017. The targets became enshrined in the totally revised CO2 Act in September 2020. Their implementation in the CO2 Act adopted by Parliament in the autumn session was rejected by the Swiss electorate on 13 June 2021.

The accountable sink (greenhouse gas balance of vegetation and soils) is also taken into account.
